Traveling South Australia’s Iconic Googs Track and Gawler Ranges

Day 1 - Perth to Woodlands

Thursday 17th Mar 2016

We were on the road by 10am and headed to Jesters for our pies and donuts then it was on to Brookton, Corrigin, Kondinin and Hyden. Just out of Corrigin we came across a truck with an oversize load. Hmmm is it going to be looong or w i i i d e? It was wide, not that you can tell as the heavy vehicle warning signage used nowadays only says “Oversize” rather than the old days when the signs said Over Length or Over Width.

On road trips most people like to keep amused, entertained etc. We like to listen to the radio but because radio transmissions outside of the metro area seem to be weaker than days gone by we entertain ourselves by using the in-car media system’s voice activation to select music. This modern state of the art technology never fails to deliver. If you ask it to play “Meatloaf” it replies “dialing 30, is this correct?” “NO” play Johnny Cash” the reply is “playing Tommy Pash, is this correct?” “NO” We get a good 15 minutes of amusement out of this.

Passing through Hyden for fuel, it turns out we and some others couldn’t fill up at our preferred fuel stop due to a Telstra communications issue. The poor chap lost out on several sales with more to come for the day. Not to worry he’ll get free data downloads when Telstra offer it in a couple of weeks time. Hmm, not sure if that makes up for lost business. By 6.30pm we pull in at the Woodlands Rest Area, what a lovely spot. After tea we settle in for night with it looking like rain…..
